A little while ago the City of Greater Bendigo put out a call for artists who might be interested in creating some large scale artwork which could be used to wrap the two ‘lanterns’ and electrical boxes throughout the Hargreaves Mall.

Of the artists who responded to the call out, four artists were selected to respond to the brief and create concepts for the wraps.

I submitted concepts that responded to the council’s chosen colour palette and theme of ‘Bendigo landmarks’ incorporating Bendigo landmarks View Point, the Alexandra Fountain, the Post Office Clocktower and the Central Deborah Gold Mine Poppethead as background elements with native plants and birds from the Bendigo Goldfields region as foreground elements.

I am pleased to say that I was one of the two artists chosen to complete the project, my work was selected to appear on the ‘lanterns’ and Heidi Franklin‘s work was chosen for the wraps and decals on the electrical boxes.

My work includes three ‘hero’ pieces, one with a kingfisher and wattle with the Central Deborah Gold Mine Poppethead in the background, one with two honeyeaters perched on banksias with View Point in the background and the third features a blue wren sitting on Bendigo waxflowers with the Post Office Clocktower in the background. The fourth piece needed to fit around the video screen on the front of the first lantern so it does not have a bird on it but matches the colouring of the honeyeaters piece but includes more banksias and the Alexandra Fountain in the background.

Thank you to the City of Greater Bendigo for the opportunity and to Signarama Bendigo for expertly applying the wraps.

Of particular significance to me is the blue wren image which is in honour of my grandmother Mary Elizabeth Lockhart.
